Throw back movies when done right are great to watch. The FP nailed it, for example. Manborg falls into this genre of film and bills itself as a “cult-tastic throwback to 80’s sci-fi action films like ROBOCOP and THE TERMINATOR.” While it sounds awesome, its self-description isn’t completely truthful.
I had a genuinely fun time watching Manborg, even more so the “extended trailer” that followed the credits. Directed by Steven Kostanski, Manborg centers on a dead soldier that gets reanimated as part man, part machine. He is out to avenge his brother’s death by killing the man that killed his brother, and himself for that matter. All the characters in the movie are based on characters from other well known 80’s movies. I don’t want to ruin the surprise but you’ll easily be able to guess what movies they were borrowed from. Between the characters and level of special effects the movie lived up to its billing. It has the right mix of humor, along with pho seriousness that does indeed give it tremendous cult potential.
Having said that, this movie isn’t for everyone. It’s one of those movies where you need to have the right mindset going into it. Also it helps if you’ve seen some 80’s movies, particularly the ones referenced.
Rating: Has the makings of a cult classic and delivered on its billing (5/10)
