It took five years to make but it finally looks like Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmasters is ready to make it’s theatrical debut in China on December 18th. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the project, this was actually supposed to be the first film on the legendary Ip Man, Bruce Lee’s master, before it hit development hell, accidents and all sorts of delays. Now, after countless retelling of this famous man, Wong Kar Wai is ready to bring his vision to the big screen with superstar Tony Leung Chiu Wai taking on the role of the famed master.
With Zhang Zi Yi, Chang Chen, Cung Le, Bruce Leung Siu Lung and Wang Qingxiang taking on supporting roles, it looks like we will truly be in for something special. Wai is a great filmmaker and the below trailer is beautifully shot and shows a lot of dramatic and action oriented promise. If there was one Asian film to get excited about for the remainder of 2012, it would most certainly be this one.
Take a look at the stylish trailer for The Grandmasters below and let us know what you think, does it hold up to Donnie Yen’s version or is it not fair to compare?
