This article has the potential to be a huge spoiler for WB’s planned Justice League film in that the villain for the film has apparently been leaked. Do not continue on unless you want to be potentially spoiled while reading a pretty interesting article.
The guys over at Latino Review have a pretty solid track record when it comes to reporting on stuff they believe to be true, but nothing official has been announced yet. They have their sources and for the most part, their sources come through with the spoilerish info. Yesterday they released an article saying that they have an inside source that claimed to know who the villain will be for the highly anticipated, yet still not official Justice League film. We know that there is apparently a script for the film and that the executives over at WB want to move forward with trying to compete against Marvel and their choke hold on the superhero market right now. Also Zach Snyder has mentioned that Man of Steel would have some impact on the Justice League film. So things are slowly but surly moving.
With so many great DC villains to choose from, how would Justice League decide on one, two or three different villains that would force some of the greatest and yet untapped heroes to join forces? By saying screw it, lets go big or go home, we want Darkseid!
When this news first broke, I had to sit here and think of the pros and cons of this decision because Darkseid is a HUGE villain/immortal God in the DC universe and has been a pain in the League’s side for years. Again this is still a rumor and nothing have been solidified or confirmed as of yet.
Darkseid would make a great villain in a film, however you can’t use him for the first film in a potential line of films. Darkseid, to help people relate a bit, is kind of like the Thanos of the DC universe. He is an immortal god from the planet Apokolips that is made up of anti-life and can possess people. Usually when he comes around it takes everyone to defeat him. What Marvel did was smart, start off slow and gradually work your way up to a big gun. What DC is doing is potential overload for the non familiar movie goer. How in the world do you introduce 3-5 new heroes that have never been on screen before and then somehow work a cosmic villain into the picture. Can or could it be done? Sure, if you had about 4-6 hours to spend watching a film, otherwise the film would feel too rushed and would likely have too many plot holes and a lack of character development.
I understand where DC and WB are coming from if in fact they do decide to role with Darkseid, and I can’t fault them for this. They have fallen behind and they have to do something drastic to keep up with Marvel, however, going cosmic in the first film before any characters have been developed is very risky (see Green Lantern). What they need to do is start off small, develop some of the heroes like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Flash, etc. and have them face off against an iconic yet smaller villain like Braniac or Sinestro. Someone who is a strong solid villain but not the strongest or deadliest one in the DC universe. Not to mention many non DC fans and regular movie goers might get the sense that DC is trying to do a kockoff of Thanos, because let’s face it, everyone and their dog has now seen The Avengers and kind of knows who Thanos is. Plus if the plan is to really introduce Thanos as the villain in Guardians of the Galaxy, which comes out in 2014 a full year before the expected release of Justice League, DC is going to have some serious issues.
