The first of the major awards announcements has finally arrived with the release of the 2013 SAG award nominations and man are there are some serious contenders missing from this list that will likely be included in the Golden Globe and Oscar slate.
So while you check out the list below I’ll be throwing in my snub commentary and questions. I’m also letting you know right now that of all the movies listed I have yet to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Impossible, Zero Dark Thirty and The Sessions.
Male Actor, Lead Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln John Hawkes, The Sessions Hugh Jackman, Les Misérables Denzel Washington, Flight
So where is Joaquin Phoenix? He and Hoffman were what kept The Master interesting and everyone thought he was a lock for his performance. I figured it’d be him and Daniel Day-Lewis in a fight for the crown not Bradley Cooper who just might steal it (for some odd reason-even if he was pretty good).
Male Actor, Supporting Alan Arkin, Argo Javier Bardem, Skyfall Robert De Niro, Silver Linings Playbook Philip Seymour Hoffman, The Master Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln
I’m utterly shocked that Django Unchained didn’t even get mentioned in this category, granted the actors in this category are all worthy but I think either De Niro or Arkin could be bumped for at least Waltz (if he’s considered a supporting actor).
Female Actor, Lead Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty Marion Cotillard, Rust and Bone Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook Helen Mirren, Hitchcock Naomi Watts, The Impossible
For this category I’m surprised Emmanuelle Riva, especially after seeing all the attention her film, Amour, has been getting from the critics as of late. Even if I’m not a fan of the movie she was fantastic. Also, Quvenzhane Wallis from Beasts of the Southern Wild got left off and, for this awards show, that leave me baffled. I figured she would of won the entire guild over for her performance. This is a tough category to predict.
Female Actor, Supporting Sally Field, Lincoln Anne Hathaway, Les Misérables Helen Hunt, The Sessions Nicole Kidman, The Paperboy Maggie Smith, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
The only snub I can think of at the moment is potentially Ann Down for Compliance. Though I haven’t seen the film yet, but will soon, I’ve heard enough good things to warrant a potential awards nomination.
Cast in a Motion Picture Argo, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Les Misérables, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook
I don’t think I can argue with this one. It is ensemble based and though I think the only other serious contender was Django Unchained it’s possible it may not have been seen by enough voters, though I could be making that up. Django is the big snub for me but the rest are all worthy candidates (minus the one I haven’t seen yet)
TV – I’m not going to comment on the TV awards as I don’t watch enough. I’m completely biased towards Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, that’s all you need to know.
