The Academy Awards are still a few weeks away (February 27th, to be exact), yet the predictions are buzzing about the likely winners for the four acting categories, as well as Best Picture. Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech took home the top prize for Best Acting ensemble, which included Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter, Anthony Andrews, Jennifer Ehle, Michael Gambon, Derek Jacobi, Guy Pearce, and Timothy Spall.
The Social Network walked away empty-handed, especially after critics expected the voters (SAG members, actors voting for their peers) to pick David Fincher’s young cast. However, this season’s acting favorites and last month’s Golden Globe winners took home the coveted Actor statuette. This list of winners includes Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Melissa Leo (The Fighter), and Christian Bale (The Fighter), who was joined on stage during his acceptance speech by the real-life Dicky Eklund.
Like last year, the SAGs, Golden Globes, and Oscars all had mutual winners in Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side, Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, Monique for Precious, and Christoph Waltz for Inglorious Basterds, whereas in previous years, Kate Winslet (The Reader), Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby), and Jamie Foxx (Ray) were a few who had consecutive wins.
On a side note, actors and actresses most notable for their motion picture roles were also honored for their small screen roles, like the legendary Al Pacino for You Don’t Know Jack, Me and Orson Welles star Claire Danes for Temple Grandin, Ghost World’s Steve Buscemi for Boardwalk Empire, The Proposal’s Betty White for Hot in Cleveland, and The Departed’s Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock, who has now dominated the category for five straight years.
Additionally, Inception was awarded with Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture, which was pitted against The Green Zone and Robin Hood. For a complete list of all the winners and nominees, check out the official list at the SAG site.
Anyway, what are your Oscar predictions? Do you think Portman and Leo are shoe-ins for favorite females? What about Firth and Bale? Do they deserve to bring home the golden man? Stay tuned to the 83rd Annual Academy Awards on February 27th at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood to see who’s making movie history.
