With the recent brouhaha that surrounds Showtime’s hit show Homeland, it is no surprise that The Weinstein Company has looked to capitalize on the trendy romanticism of CIA operations with a new John Stockwell directed dramatization of the Bin Laden raid. Unfortunately, it was also not surprising when Seal Team Six comes across as merely…okay.
With a cast consisting of Xzibit, Freddy Rodriguez, William Fichter, and Kathleen Robertson, the film merits no emotional attachment to any of the characters. However, it was Robertson’s character, a CIA agent overly obsessed with killing Bin Laden, that is hardest to stomach. First off, she is way too good looking to play the part believably, which I guess is not really her fault. And secondly, her character seems to be a mirror image of Claire Daines on Homeland, which I guess is also not her fault, aside from the fact that Daines plays it much better. Surprisingly the best performance was given by Eddie Kaye Thomas or as most of us know him, Finch from American Pie. It seems Seal Team Six displays Thomas‘ skills in more serious roles but will not be the vehicle for his superstardom.
The film is an hour and twenty minute long build-up to see the killing of the worlds most wanted man, which when it finally occurs, lasts for a total of five seconds and merits a collective “That was it?” And considering the recent reports that Bin Laden was actually dead before Team Six got there, I’m not sure how Harvey Weinstein can still sell this film as “based on the true story.”
Summary: Worth watching only if your a diehard fan of CIA dramas, otherwise forgettable with little to no historical background. (6/10)
