CNN personnel will be doing more than just reporting at this years Sundance Film Festival. Vinnie Malhotra, of CNN Worldwide, will be on the ground looking at documentaries to acquire for CNN Films. This comes right after an announcement that CNN has acquired rights to three upcoming documentaries. Most notably a Martin Scorsese produced documentary entitled Life Itself, based on the best selling Roger Ebert memoir of the same name.
CNN also plans to develop a documentary about the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and how some of the staggering images from that day played an integral role in the nations healing process. They have also announced a film from Page One: Inside the New York Times director Andrew Rossi.
Furthermore, they have announced plans for a film which will detail stories of girls around the world dealing with hardship. Girl Rising will feature voiceovers from many notable actresses such as Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Selena Gomez.
“CNN is proud to announce these production agreements at this festival which has done so much to support independent storytelling. Our aim at CNN Films is to showcase the work of exceptional documentary filmmakers and to build conversations around the issues they raise across our global platforms,” said managing editor for CNN Worldwide Mark Whitaker in a statement on Friday.
