There are a handful of films on my “2013 Must See” list, and Inside Llewyn Davis is close to the top. Not only do Joel and Ethan Coen make incredibly beautiful character-driven films, but this film is set in the 1960s folk music scene in New York’s Greenwich Village — one of my favorite places in the world. The clips in the trailer evoke the Village scene from photos in early issues of Rolling Stone (a far greater magazine than the pop culture rag put out under the same name today), and the movie features some incredible acting talent including John Goodman (who is on the hottest streak of his career right now), Carey Mulligan, and Oscar Issac as the titular Llewyn Davis.
Not much has been revealed about the movie’s plot, but it appears that Davis is a bit of an aimless musician with a roguish streak, and his relationship with his music (and not to mention Carey Mulligan) will drive the film. It seems like a recipe for an incredible experience. I’m a sucker for movies about musicians (Almost Famous is one of my all time favorite movies), so my anticipation for this movie has only grown after watching the trailer.
There has been no release date set (though IMDb has been claiming a February 8th release for a while) because the movie still does not have a distributor. But what does the cryptic “One Night Only” mean at the end of the trailer? Let’s hope that’s just a tagline and not the expected release strategy!
