At one time a film with the name Matthew McConaughey attached used to be met with eye rolls and groans is now met with anticipation and smiles. Recognizing his voice during the opening of new trailer, ‘Mud’ is yet another example of that.
Jeff Nichols brings us his follow up film to the 2011 unknown, but superb, Take Shelter, Mud with McConaughey starring as the titular character. The coming of age drama tells the story of two boys, Ellis and Neckbone, who come across a mysterious man wanted for a crime, hiding out on a small island in Mississippi. Backing the film up is the very talented Michael Shannon (Take Shelter and 2013’s Man of Steel) who is finally getting the recognition he deserves, and the ever consistent Reese Witherspoon. Mud promises to carry the momentum of Matthew McConaughey’s resurgence as a leading man as well as the young director Jeff Nichols ability to tell very dark, gritty and powerful drama’s.
It feels like we’ll be riding the uncertain journey with the two young teens as they try to decide if McConaughey‘s Mud is to be trusted as he reveals his story to them. Hot on his trail are local lawmen and it suggests the boys will be at odds whether they should turn Mud in, or keep him safe from the men who are after him. Reese Witherspoon plays the hard to work out girlfriend of Mud, does she want to be with him or does she want to be as far away as him as possible? She could be the key here to unraveling the whole truth in a film that looks set to provide yet another shinning light in Matthew McConaughey’s revival. Screened at Cannes to positive reviews (Damon Wise of Empire) fans in the US will have to wait until April 26th 2013 for Mud, and fans in the UK will have to hold on to their seats for a bit longer for a release date.
