If you thought the addition of Jamie Foxx as Electro in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was breaking news, just wait until you see what the latest batch has in-store.
Paul Giamatti has recently entered into talks to join the film as another infamous villain in the Spider-Man universe, the Rhino. The Rhino has been portrayed in various ways since his original debut in 1966, however one thing has generally stayed the same, he is a dumb (mentally) villain with superhuman strength and has the ability to charge at people at superhuman speeds. The news comes from THR who also mentioned that another star might potentially join the cast along with Giamatti, Felicity Jones. At this point and time, we aren’t sure as to who or what role Jones would be playing.
The Rhino is an interesting character and I can’t help but to think that Webb might be watching the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoons on Disney XD. Not to get too off topic, but the past two weeks on the show featured, The Lizard, Electro and just recently the Rhino. Call it a dumb coincidence, but I’m starting to see a pattern between the two. It will be interesting to see which route they go with the Rhino and if it will be a suit that Giamatti wears or will it be a transformation due to a injection, much like The Lizard (Rhys Ifans), in the first film.
With the addition of the Rhino to the film, many have started to wonder if Webb is currently working towards creating the Super Villain group, the Sinister Six, for a future film. The group over the years has featured many of Spider-Man’s enemies which include, Green Goblin, Lizard, Rhino, Electro, Dr. Octopus, Sandman, Vulture, etc. While not taking into account Doc Oc, Sandman and Vulture, the others are already there and waiting. We also know that Webb has mentioned of going the Death of Gwen Stacy storyline from the comics, so it will be interesting to see where the “trilogy” heads.
What are you thoughts on the Rhino joining the cast of villains? Would you rather have seen another villain instead? Comment below!
