Recent Golden Globe winner and current Hollywood it-girl Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) is set to star alongside Colin Farrell (Seven Psychopaths) in an adaptation of August Strindberg’s classic stage play Miss Julie, according to Variety. The film is written and directed by two-time Oscar-nominated actress, Liv Ullman (1973’s The Emigrants and 1977’s Face to Face).
The period piece is set in 1874 Sweden, which investigates the male-female dynamic, family power, as well as aristocracy. The story “follows a woman trying to escape an existence cramped by social mores who is suddenly drawn to a senior servant.” Farrell is suspected to play the male servant, Jean, but there has been no confirmation behind his role. Additional casting includes Samantha Morton (Cosmopolis).
For those of you unfamiliar with Ullman’s work, her last film effort was 2000’s Swedish romance, Faithless, which earned her a Palme d’Or nomination at that year’s Cannes Film Festival. Also, she directed Cate Blanchett and Joel Edgerton in a Brooklyn Academy of Music stage production in 2009 of A Streetcar Named Desire.
There is no word yet on when production will begin, but according to Chastain’s IMDB page, her filming schedule is clear, which makes for an exciting 2013 once the Oscar nominee ends her run on Broadway next weekend in The Heiress.
