When Movie Buzzers first shared with audiences the rumors behind a remake of The Great Gatsby back in October 2010, it seemed like we’d never see the day when the film would finally hit theaters. However, word broke that Baz Luhrmann’s epic 3-D interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel will premiere at the opening of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The Great Gatsby is Luhrmann’s third film to open the festival, after Strictly Ballroom (1993) and Moulin Rouge (2001) have cemented the director’s visionary status, who recently shared with The New York Times the following statement: “It is a great honor for all those who have worked on ‘The Great Gatsby’ to open the Cannes Film Festival. We are thrilled to return to a country, place and festival that has always been so close to our hearts, not only because my first film ‘Strictly Ballroom’ was screened there 21 years ago, but also because F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside Saint-Raphaël”
For those of you who don’t know, the movie stars Leonard DiCaprio (Django Unchained) as the lavish Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire (Brothers) as Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan (Drive) as Gatsby’s long lost love Daisy Fay Buchanan, Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty) as her husband Tom, and Isla Fisher (Bachelorette) as Myrtle Wilson.
Check out the trailer here for the film which hits theaters nationwide on May 10th. Are you excited to see this film? Do you think the seminal Jazz Age tale deserved another shot at the big screen?
