One film that I know 15-35 year olds along with stoners of all kinds are looking forward to this summer is the upcoming Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen directed film This is the End, an apocalyptic action comedy about a handful of celebrities who get stuck in James Franco’s house as the rapture begins to unfold around them.
The movie starts with Jay Baruchel coming into town hoping to just relax and spend time with Seth Rogen. When Rogen wants to go to James Franco’s housewarming party (the two have become BFF’s), Jay, who doesn’t like any of those people, reluctantly goes. While at the party, earthquakes and sinkholes open up with fires spreading across LA resulting in the immediate deaths of many people. After the initial insanity, the only people left in the house are Jay, Seth, James, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride.
This is the End is everything you’d ever want from a comedy starring all these guys. The dialogue is absolutely hilarious, the events that follow, including their reactions to Emma Watson and giant demons, is side splitting and any opportunity to hear Craig Robinson scream is just priceless. Just imagine their past films like Superbad, Knocked-Up and Pineapple Express, smash them together, and then multiply the result by 10. This movie has all of that raunchiness, stupidity and so much more jam packed into 107 minutes.
What makes This is the End stand work so well is that all of these actors are at their best when they are playing themselves (or at least close to their cinematic self) and can rift off each other throughout the film unlike their most recent single starrer comedies which haven’t been as nearly as entertaining as this. Jonah Hill plays this sensitive guy who happens to be Seth’s new BFF but tries to befriend Jay as well even though Jay is an unsocial, cautious but knowledgeable little bitch throughout the film. Franco is basically an idiot, Rogen is a nervous and scared Jew, Craig is the uneasy black guy and Danny is the complete asshole he always is in his films/TV show. The chemistry amongst the cast is stoner magical and whenever a random celebrity shows up they just fit right in with their outlandish shenanigans.
What you’ll find most amazing about this film is the budget that’s behind it. While some of the effects in the beginning seem a little iffy and cheap, once you get to the third act you know these guys aren’t messing around. The third act of This is the End is one of the wildest I’ve seen in a mainstream movie in years. I mean what unfolds is crazy rapture pandemonium that has to be seen to be believed. While still very funny, it is also pretty damn intense and may even make you jump once or twice because of the crazy shit these guys encounter.
One of my favorite moments in the film has to do with the plethora of celebrity cameos, most notable Michael Cera. Not being much of a Michael Cera fan, this movie made him “cool” in my book after playing against type as an over the top coke snorting asshole. He was absolutely hilarious and steals all the early scenes he’s in. One other favorite line of mine is when they compare the Holy Trinity to Neapolitan ice cream, it was so wrong yet oh so right.
This is the End is going to be the first great male driven R-rated comedy of the summer and will easily be one of the funniest of the year alongside the female driven comedy The Heat. If you like stupidity, enjoy fun over the top comedy and hearing grown celebrities hilariously bicker and argue about cumming on each other then I suggest making a b-line to your local theater come June 12th because This is the End is going to rock your world…or end it.
Rating: Hilarious, dirty and everything you could ever want from this outrageous cast (7.7/10)
