Growing up I really loved Captain Planet and the Planeteers, it was a fun show, like environmental Power Rangers, where a group of kids would come together to try and stop villains from polluting the planet and when they came together with their rings and shouted their various element Captain Planet would be created to save the day. Many people have been trying to bring a live-action Captain Planet movie to the big screen for some time now but it looks like Sony is now close to acquiring the rights for the show and, if it does close, the film would be produced by Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford and end up being a big budget release.
To be honest though, does the target audience of the show actually want a live-action Captain Planet movie? I ask because this show ran from 1993 to 1996, i.e. when I was in elementary school, so even though Sony may be targeting my generation, the idea of an in your face environmentalist movie should be targeting the kids of America, not me. On top of that, the show was super fun, bubbly and had in your face messages and we know how those films usually turn out so it’s likely that Sony will have to make it a much more serious movie without ruining the fun side of what Captain Planet and his team represented. That, my friends, is a very difficult task. How do you create a quality fun movie with some serious tones and messages delivered throughout.
As much as I’d love to see Captain Planet again I don’t know if it actually makes sense. Yes, we do need to keep stressing environmental issues but this is going to be so in your face that people might not like it. How do you all feel? Are you up for a Captain Planet movie or hesitant like I am?
