For British fans, Steve Coogan’s name is synonymous with his most famous character/creations – Alan Patridge. For American fans, you might not know, so here’s a quick history lesson.
In the 90’s Coogan was on a Radio programme which helped give birth to his Patridge character. Following it’s success he wrote the TV series, I’m Alan, which was met with great success and still regarded as one of the best British sitcoms of recent years. Alan Patridge is a quite unique individual, a parody of a TV and Radio presenter – mainly focusing on sport and chat Radio. Over the years Coogan has struggled to shake the Patridge shadow, which while I can imagine is frustrating for any actor/comedy, is also a great testament to the love and high regard fans have for the Patridge character.
So now we’re living in the ‘TV shows turning into films era’ and Coogan has decided to get on bored and give Patridge one last run out. In the past, Steve has said of Alan “he’s like a relative who you quite like to see now and again, but you wouldn’t want to live with.” Alpha Papa, scheduled for release in the UK on August 7th might be one of those rare TV to film experiments that actually works. While the story from the film does seem quite larger than life, it’s not too outrageous or wacky. It’s actually quite a believable situation for Alan to get into, and a lot of fans are excited for the film to hit the cinemas later this summer.
And for die hard fans, you won’t be disappointed to hear that the world première will be held in Norwich, the city made famous by Steve Coogan/Alan Patridge.
