Yes, we know this is old news for some of you but we had to report it. The fairy tale movie scene is expanding with more news surrounding the Kenneth Branaugh-helmed reinterpretation of Cinderella. Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) has been added to the all-star cast of the project set to hit theaters in March 2015. His role is currently unspecified, but knowing the age-old romance between the oppressed titular housemaid and her charming prince, we can try to narrow down the who’s who.
Also cast in the film are newcomer Lily James (Wrath of the Titans) as Cinderella, Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) as evil stepmother Lady Tremaine, Helena Bonham Carter (Les Miserables) as the Fairy Godmother, Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) as Prince Charming, and stepsisters Holliday Grainger (The Borgias) and Sophie McShera (Downton Abbey).
With this, we can assess that Skarsgard will take on the part of Cinderella’s late father or perhaps as the king who pressures his bachelor son to seek a bride, especially when that pesky glass slipper goes rogue.
The film is gaining attention not just for its cast, but also since the screenplay was a collaboration between Aline Brosh McKenna (We Bought A Zoo, 27 Dresses) and Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass, About a Boy).
What do you think of this casting choice? Who would you like to see play these parts? Do you think it’s a good idea for Hollywood to remake Cinderella?
