Mad Men actress January Jones is taking on the Wild West in her new film, Sweetwater, also called Sweet Vengeance. The movie is directed and co-written by Logan Miller (Touching Home), but has the faintest touches of Quentin Tarantino’s influence, especially in a post Django world. However, this project doesn’t look like it’ll leave audiences reeling in entertainment, especially since Jones lacks the presence of other major lead actresses.
The vague trailer begs to question what the plot really is beyond a pretty widow seeking vengeance after her husband’s death. Ed Harris plays the sheriff after the gun-toting redhead. Also in the film is a barely recognizable Jason Isaacs (TV’s Awake) in the role of Prophet Josiah.
While it’s interesting to see Jones in a role so unlike her 60’s housewife persona, Betty Draper, I don’t think there’s enough going on here in 1800s New Mexico to widely attract audiences in the midst of her big screen transition from small screen ice queen to big screen ice queen (no pun intended for her previous work in X-Men: First Class).
The movie has hit the film festival circuit, receiving less than pleasing reviews, which don’t necessarily surprise me either. Watch the trailer and see the awkward bloodbath for yourself. Would you see this movie? What do you think is missing from the trailer?
