It’s unfortunate if you haven’t heard the name Chris Kyle before. Kyle was a U.S. Navy SEAL recognized as the most lethal sniper in American history, served four tours in Iraq, was awarded incredibly distinguished metals, and wrote a bestselling book about his life, American Sniper. Oh, he also reportedly punched former Navy SEAL/wrestler/governor/actor Jesse Ventura in the face. In other words, he was the real deal — the guy that action movie heroes only pretend to be on the big screen.
Tragically, Kyle was killed earlier this year at a shooting range in Texas by another veteran reportedly suffering from PTSD. News of Kyle’s murder wasn’t widely reported by the national news even though his funeral was held at Cowboys Stadium for reasons I’ll leave up to you to guess (I’m staying out of that firestorm). But not long after Kyle’s death it was revealed that Bradley Cooper was set to star and produce an adaptation of American Sniper. Steven Spielberg was initially announced as director but later dropped out, presumably because like his friend Martin Scorsese he has expressed interest in directing about ten other projects.
However, according to Twitch the production has found an even better replacement — Clint Eastwood. Eastwood will likely start working on the film when he finishes filming Jersey Boys. Frankly, I think Eastwood’s background in films about violence and patriotism is likely a far better fit for American Sniper. Not that Spielberg hasn’t directed those sort of films, but Eastwood has explored those themes throughout his career in most of his films.
But that’s just my opinion. Do you think Spielberg or Eastwood would be a better choice to direct American Sniper?
