Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has been one of the more under-the-radar fairy tale reboots in the midst of a triple Snow White threat, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, and Tim Burton’s Maleficent take on Sleeping Beauty’s nemesis. With two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner (The Town) and Clash of the Titans beauty Gemma Arterton playing the title roles, the very underrated Famke Janssen (X-Men) has just been cast to play the lead witch of an evil coven. Norwegian director of Dead Snow Tommy Wirkola is taking the helm. The script was written by him alongside co writer D.W. Harper (All You Need is Kill). IMDB reveals that this is not a retelling of the original fable since the film is “catching up with Hansel and Gretel 15 years after their incident involving a gingerbread house, the siblings have evolved into bounty hunters who hunt witches,” thus explaining why we’re not seeing teenagers play the legendary siblings.
ShockYa adds, “They have no become witch bounty hunters, destined to destroy the witches that nearly killed them in the gingerbread house.”
Cinema Blend expands with, “Surely there are still plenty of roles open, from the witches that Hansel and Gretel are hunting to even, perhaps, their piece of sh*t parents.” Also, adding, “Janssen doesn’t get nearly the amount of work she should, but this sounds like it could really be a lot of fun. The production already quickly assembled some great talent and a high-potential concept. Now if only we could know a bit more about the story and characters.” This “fantasy action-adventure film,” according to ShockYa, playing a witch will be easy as pie” for an actress known for her roles in the X-Men series as Jean Grey / Phoenix and Xenia Onatopp in GoldenEye.
Deadline reports, “Gary Sanchez is producing the witch project. Janssen just wrapped her scripting / editing debut on ‘Bringing Up Bobby.’” The actress can be seen next in Down the Shore, a romantic thriller co-starring James Gandolfini. Renner, who is up for an Oscar later this month, has just wrapped his role in Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol, and Arterton will be reprising her mythical role as Io in Wrath of the Titans.
