“Okay, that’s enough. Thank you, fellas. Hold it. Hold it, fellas. I’m afraid you’re just too darn loud. Next, please.” – Huey Lewis in Back to the Future
Okay, this is funny stuff — a UK theater chain, VUE Entertainment, is so convinced that parents bringing their kids to screenings of One Direction: This is Us 3D are in for a miserable experience that the chain is distributing 20,000 sets of earplugs to adults at the company’s 82 theaters, according to Deadline. This is not so much to drown out the music but to drown out the screaming of teenage and pre-teen girls the moment the boy band’s heartthrob young singers appear on the screen.
It’s a really clever marketing gimmick (though I’m sure some parents would rather just bring an iPod with tunes more to their liking to listen to instead), but I’m sure some teenage girl, somewhere, is feeling insulted by this.
Movie Buzzers was not invited to a preview screening of One Direction: This is Us 3D (shocking, I know), so we cannot tell you for certain if the movie is any better without earplugs. However, if I had to guess, I would assume it most certainly is.
No word if theater chains are planning to do the same with upcoming Metallica movie Metallica Through the Never… but probably not.
