Tom Hanks has been acting for 33 years and has been in over 72 films. However, it seems that Mr. Hanks has one role he still has an inkling to play: A superhero. And, after reviewing his very lengthy resume, it would be true that, among his various roles, he has yet to play a superhero.
Mr. Hanks was recently asked which role he has always wanted to portray to which he stated: a superhero. Hanks continued,“They don’t ask me. I keep trying… Come on, I can do it. I can do it,” he said. “Even let me play a bad guy, let me play the bad guy against Batman. I’ll do anything, call me. They’ve never asked. What do I gotta do? God, I want to throw a shield at somebody. I want that.”
Hanks went on to say: “I don’t want to play the guy in the suit who tells the superheroes what’s going on, I don’t want to be that guy. ‘Well, you know Batman, Captain America, Iron Man, here’s what we’ve discovered.’ I don’t want to be that guy. I want to get in there, I want to play The Flash or something like that. They’ll never give me a chance.”
I can honestly say that it would have been nice to see Hanks fighting crime in a pair of men’s long johns but at the age of 57 (and recently announcing that he has Type 2 diabetes), I’m not quite sure that any superhero roles would suite him at this point. It would have been nice 20 years ago, but, alas, time flies by for all of us.
I guess I’ll just have to stick with his role as Ray Peterson from 1989’s The Burbs to satiate my appetite for Hanks being a superhero.
