At the same interview session of NYCC where I got to participate in the WWE Studios roundtable interviews with the directors and star of See No Evil 2, we also had the chance to speak with director Zach Lipovsky and WWE star Hornswoggle, real name Dylan Postl, for the upcoming origins story of the popular Leprechaun series titled Leprechaun: Origins. Below you’ll find a summary of the interviews as well as my question and answer bit with Mr. Postl.
The Leprechaun films starring Warwick Davis are very popular have a pretty strong cult following. While I personally have never seen them, it’s a series of films that are beloved by fans are happen to be extremely funny and ridiculous, I hear he goes to space in one. Both director Zach Lipovsky and star Dylan Postl promised this would be extremely different from those films. They promised this is going to be very much an R-rated film and it is going to be dark and twisted. What Zach seemed to be very excited about is that when people who love the original go into the film and expect a comedy, they’ll be shocked because it’s going to be anything but that.
With regards to Dylan’s role, he hasn’t actually spoken to Warwick about the role because when the film was originally announced he was upset that he wasn’t playing the character. Like I mentioned earlier, this movie is going to be very dark and very twisted, it isn’t a funny film and he stressed that his character will be going through some shit to say the least. He also went on to say that the costume/make-up took two hours to put on and take off, it was much more stressful than anything he has had to do for the WWE.
Movie Buzzers: How do you plan on distinguishing yourself from Warwick Davis’ portrayal which has become pretty iconic to fans?
Dylan Postl: He owned that character and that was him, people know it and it will go [down] in history that when people think of the Leprechaun movies they’ll think of his portrayal in it. It’s so different [Dylan’s role] and it was meant to be, I’ve never seen the old movies and I’m glad because I wouldn’t have been able to take anything from those for this new character.
