With promotion for Thor: The Dark World in full throttle in preparation for its November 8 release, head honcho Kevin Feige is back making the rounds for interviews. And as one would expect, questions are being asked just as much about what’s on Marvel slate in upcoming years than what’s happening in upcoming weeks. Feige is usually tight-lipped, so whenever any information spills out, it’s good to hear. In a recent interview, more has slipped out then usual. Among the tidbits:
The Avengers are not meeting up with the Guardians of the Galaxy “any time soon”
-Expect a Guardians trailer at the end of this year/early next year
-Expect Ant-Man cast announcements by the end of the year
–Ant-Man’s genre is mainly a heist movie
–Dr. Strange is in production, and is a vehicle to explore other dimensions of the MCU
–Black Panther is in production.
The Guardians news is certainly interesting, but not out of the ordinary; it makes sense to establish the Guardians on their own before having them meet the Avengers, and a trailer in late 2013/early 2014 makes sense given the film’s August 2014 release date. The details on the new films seem particularly more mouth-watering, since there is an idea of not just what the films are, but what type of films they’ll be.
Marvel Studios has been very smart about making sure that all their films are broken down into sub-genres, exposing different types of stories to moviegoers (as well as showing that they can always be fresh creatively). The idea of a heist film sounds fun, as well as the potential for the type of stories and questions that the inter-dimensional world of Dr. Strange brings. And while Black Panther seems to be the furthest away, it shows that Marvel understands that their leading heroes need to be of all races, not just Caucasian. Just like Black Panther was the first mainstream black superhero in comics, the King of Wakanda looks to be taking that role in the films as well. An even more diverse Marvel Universe? That’s the best news to me.
