For those of you who loved the 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You (starring Julia Stiles, the late Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt), then news about the production of follow-up sequel film, 10 Things I Hate About Life, will get you plenty nostalgic and excited. The original movie’s producing duo Andrew Lazar and Gil Junger, also the film’s writer and director, has reteamed for a new tale that explores the same high emotions behind young love and all the awkward hilarity that may follow, according to a recent press release for the Vision Films production.
Although the newest installment does not continue the storyline from the previous film’s antics, we get to see Evan Rachel Wood (Across the Universe) as the protagonist Willow who meets Thomas McDonnell’s (The Forbidden Kingdom) character; “they fall in love- just when they are about to kill themselves,” even though there’s no known connection to any Shakespearean inspiration (like Taming of the Shrew was for 10 Things I Hate About You).
Lazar has shared how pleased he is to have two-time Golden Globe nominee, with the following statement: “We are immensely happy and excited to continue to work with acclaimed actor Evan Rachel Wood in the title character of Willow… She has given us a great performance as she explores what it takes to find yourself and make you happy.” Lazar adds that the chemistry to the characters who have “crazy shared experiences and similar emotional state forms a bond that draws them both into happiness and takes them on a rollercoaster ride of young love in a world where emotions run high.”
Now that the rights to the movie have been acquired for domestic and international distribution by Vision Films, filming is set to continue in Los Angeles and Malibu from December to April of next year. The standard is set after the success of the first film, which raked in $64 million, and is still a classic comedy of the 90s that features a cluster of faces famous from the decade and even today like Larisa Oleynik (The Secret World of Alex Mack), David Krumholtz (Numbers), Andrew Keegan (O), Gabrielle Union (Think Like A Man), Allison Janney (Mom), Susan May Pratt (Center Stage), and Larry Miller (The Nutty Professor).
Do you think it’s possible for a sequel film to match up to the 1999 original 10 Things I Hate About You? Who was your favorite Verona high character? Are you excited to see Wood’s comedic side come out on the big screen?
