Well, this is like a punch to the gut.
Deadline has the lengthy scoop that Quentin Tarantino has called off his next movie, the Western titled The Hateful Eight, after the first draft of the script has already leaked. It’s a long, must-read article, but suffice to say Tarantino showed the draft script to exactly six people: Bruce Dern, Tim Roth, Michael Masden, and their respective agents, and the script is already floating around Hollywood. As a result, the furious Tarantino has called off the film and is considering publishing the screenplay. He already has another idea in place and still hopes to work with Dern, but The Hateful Eight is dead as of now. He mentions that he didn’t even have a chance to show the script to his longtime producer, Harvey Weinstein.
If you recall, Tarantino’s script for Django Unchained leaked also, but it was much later in the casting process. This instance seems to cut too close for comfort, especially since it was only a draft.
However, it’s worth noting that Tarantino’s likely ultra-violent Western would have run against Harvey Weinstein’s newly professed desire to no longer make violent movies. I’m not saying that there’s a conspiracy, but I’m sure I won’t be the first person to bring this curious instance up…
Regardless, this is awful news for anyone who liked Django Unchained. Feel free to voice your displeasure in the comments below…
