It’s that time of year when the studios will roll out the big date movie (Winter’s Tale, anyone?) since Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. However, one romance drama that has earned its accolades through the film festival circuit is From Above, starring Danny Glover (The Color Purple), which follows the cycle of an undeniable love that transcends any and every obstacle put in its path.
Under the direction of Norry Niven, a first-time major film for the visionary, the story shares young love that stands the test of time over the course of generations, while also facing adversity between cultures. The fantastical / mystical element featured in the film’s trailer immediately call to mind imaginative tales such as Big Fish, Finding Neverland, and possibly any combination of familiar Greek and Shakespearean epics.
Glover plays William Ward, whose true love, a beautiful American Indian, Venus (Chelsea Ricketts), seemingly returns to him over and over again, starting in his teenaged years. Young William is played by Mike Wade (The Last Act). Also starring in the film is familiar-faced Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves) as Venus’ guardian. The fascinating combination of cast members and magical special effects connected to the natural electricity of love make this a must-see for any viewer with their heart on their sleeve.
The movie, which was released recently on DVD and VOD, is surely one not to miss if your romantic plans for this Friday night keep you indoors and out of the chilly winter cold! Check out the trailer below and experience a glimpse into a love story unlike any other you’ve seen in recent years.
