I love parkour and freerunning. While I might be terrible at it now I still love watching videos on YouTube or seeing my friends post about their global training exploits so it should come as no surprise that I’m a huge fan of the French action thriller District B13 (aka Banlieue 13) starring parkour legend David Belle. Back in 2011, it was announced that the writer and producer of the original film, Luc Besson, was going to be moving forward with an English language remake of the film starring Paul Walker as the lead cop and, once again, David Belle playing an ex-convict who must team up with Walker to track down his girlfriend who’s been kidnapped, by RZA of all damn people.
The new film, titled Brick Mansions, is directed by Camille Delamarre, who is making her directorial debut after editing many of Besson’s recent thrillers. The film is also Paul Walker’s final film that he actually completed and falls in-line with many of the action roles he’s held in the past and, after you watch the trailer, you’ll be happy he at least went out making, what looks like, a fun film.
The first trailer for Brick Mansions has arrived and if it doesn’t get you amped up to do flips and shit then I just feel bad for you.
The trailer for the film looks like a pretty faithful remake and follows exactly the same structure of the original, but that’s bound to happen when you have the same writer, same lead names and one of the same stars. The movie looks like a good time but worst part of this trailer is RZA, the guy can’t act and ruins everything he’s in because he’s not convincing at all, he overacts and will likely be the reason I leave the film with a sour taste in my mouth.
In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better times now house only the most dangerous criminals. Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around this area to protect the rest of the city. For undercover cop Damien Collier (Paul Walker) every day is a battle against corruption. For Lino (David Belle), every day is a fight to live an honest life. Their paths never should have crossed, but when drug kingpin, Tremaine (RZA) kidnaps Lino’s girlfriend, Damien reluctantly accepts the help of the fearless ex-convict, and together they must stop a sinister plot to devastate the entire city. With stylized action featuring thrilling Parkour stunts (David Belle is the co-founder of this physical training discipline), Brick Mansions puts an entertaining twist on the action genre.
Oh, and if you want to see one of my first video reviews when I didn’t know that you could edit pauses and mistakes out in windows movie maker then check out my review for the original B13 here.
Brick Mansions hits theaters on April 25th.
