Up until this morning I had no idea Robert De Niro was starring in yet another boxing movie, though this time it looks like one of significant and exciting quality. The film, titled Hands of Stone, stars Edgar Ramirez as the talented Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran who won 103 of his 119 bouts against some of boxing’s top talent like Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Hector Camacho and Vinny Pazienza. De Niro plays his famous trainer, Ray Arcel, who trained Duran until a rematch against Sugar Ray Leonard where Duran famously said the words ”no más” in the eighth round which ended the fight.
The boxing biopic was both written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz and seems like an exciting boxing drama and one the world needs especially since, by the time this will be released, it’ll be nearly four years since the last good boxing film, David O. Russell’s The Fighter. Also co-starring in the film are Ruben Blades, Ellen Barkin, and John Turturro. No release date is set for Hands of Stone since it has yet to get acquired but I’m sure it’ll have one in due time.
Check out the first still below and be sure to keep this one on your radar.
