They were known for armed robberies, the murders of other high-profile gangsters and mixing with celebrities in their West End nightclub, including prominent names such as Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra. They were Ronnie and Reggie Kray, two brutal East End gangsters who had their hands in organised crime, and now it seems Tom Hardy is in talks to play the Kray Twins in a new film, if reports are to be believed.
Writer/Director Brian Helgeland (L.A Confidential) has set his sights on writing and directing a feature, working titled Legend, which tells the story of the famous London mobsters, and he wants Brit Tom Hardy to play both Reggie and Ronnie Kray.
This isn’t the first time the Kray twins have had screen time. In 1990 Peter Medak directed The Krays, a British film starring real life twins Gary & Martin Kemp and then in 1991 there was a UK documentary made titled Flesh and Blood.
A big budget Hollywood film with a genuine A-list actor would add to the legend of the Kray twins who were known for their ruthless aggression during the ’50s and ’60s. The twins were very complex individuals, especially Ronnie who was openly bisexual and a suspected suffer of schizophrenia. Tom Hardy would be the perfect fit for the role(s) seeing his track record with dark and gritty characters, such as (and most appropriately) his role as Britain’s most notorious prisoner, Charles Bronson, in the critically acclaimed 2008 biopic, Bronson, which really out Hardy on the map.
