There are many memorable films that are worth watching on St. Patrick’s Day. Darby O’Gill and the Little People, The Quiet Man, The Commitments, Once and, of course, Leprechaun. Sure, a horror movie about a murderous leprechaun isn’t exactly the most jolly St. Patrick’s Day movie, but the movie is a cult classic that spawned five increasingly ridiculous sequels (including Leprechaun 4: In Space and Leprechaun: In the Hood).
Though there hasn’t been a Leprechaun movie since 2003’s Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood, over two years ago WWE Studios announced that it acquired the rights to make a prequel/reboot of the series. Instead of longtime lead Warwick Davis, WWE cast one of its little people wrestlers, Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl, as the lead in Leprechaun: Origins. Alex got a chance to speak to Postl and Leprechaun: Origins director Zach Lipovsky at last year’s New York Comic-Con (check that out here!), but the release date had bounced around a bit since then and we haven’t seen any footage from the actual movie… until today.
As a St. Patrick’s Day treat (or horror, depending on your opinion of the reboot), WWE and Postl uploaded a quick look at Leprechaun: Origins. Naturally, we don’t see the actual Leprechaun here, but the tone of the film looks much more like a traditional horror film than the horror-comedies of the original series.
Leprechaun: Origins is now set for an August release and also stars Stephanie Bennett, Teach Grant, Bruce Blain, and Adam Boys. Check out the clip below and let us know what you think about this new take on Leprechaun in the comments below:
