We’ve only ever seen Gambit on the big screen once in the less than impressive X Men Origins: Wolverine. Taylor Kitsch was the man in that film but it was pretty unanimous that he just wasn’t Gambit. Since then there’s been talks of introducing Gambit into future X-Men films or even in his own feature, so the inevitable casting rumours began.
Well the talk is over and we can reveal that 21 Jump Street star Channing Tatum will be the card-thrower. Mixed feelings have been given about the casting of Tatum, the obvious being he looks nothing like the rogue X-Man. What he lacks in the appearance (which can be altered somewhat anyway) he more than makes up for with his physical prowess. Tatum has shown he has the chops to nail the action roles and in 21 (and the upcoming 22) Jump Street he has also shown a side of being able to cut loose and have fun with his roles. Whether he has the knack to pull off the slightly more darker aspects of the character are yet to be seen, but he can certainly be the charmer that the mutant is expected to be.
Fans need not panic just yet over Tatum taking the role, he’s a much more capable actor than people give him credit for. Remember back to the 21 Jump Street days, people were unsure and he silenced those critics. There’s potential with the role of Gambit to once again show he has the the tools in his arsenal to be regarded a capable and diverse actor. And if you need any more proof, think back to Hugh Jackman when he was first cast as Wolverine, compared to our perceptions of him today.
There’s no word when a future spin-off film will happen, so there’s potential for Gambit to show up in the X Men universe before it hand as a way of establishing his character, perhaps the 2017 X Men: Apocalypse?
