I’ve been curious about the next Alejandro González Iñárritu (21 Grams, Babel, Biutiful) film Birdman ever since stories arose about Michael Keaton filming scenes for it while walking around Times Square in his underwear. Though we don’t see him in film much these days, Keaton is one of my favorite film actors. The movie also boasts a cast of Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Zach Galifianakis, Naomi Watts, and Amy Ryan, so I’m already sold.
But if you’re not as amped up as I am and want to actually know what it’s about, the first teaser came out today and it’s a bit out there. If you don’t pick up on it from the trailer, Keaton plays Riggan Thomson, an actor who was famous for playing a superhero years ago when he was a movie star. Now he is a shell of his former self and is trying to get a Broadway adapatation of Raymond Carver’s What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. The movie obviously plays on the fact that Keaton played Batman and doesn’t make many movies these days (although unlike Thomson, Keaton seems to have scaled back his work as a personal choice).
The movie is set for an October 17 release. I don’t think anyone ought to miss this one. If you’re still not convinced, check out the intriguing teaser below:
