Kevin Costner is an actor whose name is often followed by snickers and snide remarks about Waterworld and The Postman. But those who do that often are hesitant to admit that Costner was one of the most bankable actors in the late 1980s and early 1990s. But more importantly, Costner has been in some pretty good movies after all — hell, his Oscar-winning Dances With Wolves was practically lifted storybeat-by-storybeat by James Cameron for Avatar. We don’t see much of Costner in movies these days — he’s been a bit busy cleaning up oil spills (no, seriously) — so it’s a bit of surprise that Deadline is reporting that Costner is under serious consideration for a role in the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel film. After the jump I’ll go into detail about two important characters from the Superman mythology that Costner would be an excellent choice for!
I think the role that would fit Costner best — should he be in the film — is Jonathan “Pa” Kent, Superman’s adopted father. It could be just because Field of Dreams is one of the only movies guaranteed to make me cry (oh sure, like you didn’t cry when you saw it!) and because of that I always oddly think of Costner as being on a farm. I know he’s a multimillionaire and probably owns several houses, but I can’t help it — when I think of Kevin Costner, he’s standing in the middle of a cornfield. I can already see him reenacting Norman Rockwell-ish scenes with a young Clark Kent on a Kansas farm. That role has Costner written all over it.
The other possible option for Costner in my mind is Perry White, Clark Kent’s gruff editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet. I could also see Costner shouting at Jimmy Olsen “Get me coffee, two sugars, and don’t call me Chief!” from behind a big desk in a bustling newspaper office. Again, Perry White is another key mentor role for Costner that I really could see him pulling off rather nicely.
Superman: Man of Steel is set for a December 2012 release. David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) is writing the screenplay based on a story developed by Goyer and Christopher Nolan, who will also produce the film. Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300) will direct, with Henry Cavill already announced as playing the Man of Steel. Previous rumors have indicated that General Zod will be the main villain of the film, although it’s not confirmed (hey, could Costner pull that one off?)
Who do you think Costner should play in Superman: Man of Steel? Or should he stay far away from the film? Give us your thoughts in the comments below!
