From the looks of this trailer, 1980’s Raging Bull only told a fraction of the story of world middleweight boxing champion Jake LaMotta. Word about LaMotta: The Bronx Bull first came out back in mid-2012 as a film that would tell the story of LaMotta’s early and later years surrounding the years depicted in Martin Scorsese‘s classic film. Few figures in boxing have had a life as tumultuous as LaMotta has had, so there’s no wonder why one film isn’t enough to cover his story!
Director/co-writer Martin Guigui mined LaMotta’s autobiography for harrowing material involving the Bull’s troubled youth and his many run-ins with the mafia. The cast includes William Forsythe (Boardwalk Empire) as an older LaMotta, Tom Sizemore (Heat), Joe Mantegna (Criminal Minds), Paul Sorvino (Scorsese’s own Goodfellas), Penelope Ann Miller (The Artist), Robert Davi (Licence to Kill), Ray Wise (RoboCop), and Natasha Henstridge (Species).
The first thing you’ll notice in the below trailer is the color. The second thing you’ll notice? That LaMotta’s life was more trouble-ridden than you already thought!
LaMotta: The Bronx Bull will have its world premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival on April 25. In the meantime, check out the trailer below:
