Cute, adorable, funny, and wonderfully entertaining, these are just a few of the words that can be used to describe the glory that is Minions, the prequel/spin-off flick based on the best characters of the Despicable Me films.
Minions is an origin adventure tale that sees three specific minions, Stuart, Kevin and Bob, venture out into the world in search of a new boss to follow. Their adventure leads them to a place called Villain Con where they win the opportunity to become Scarlett Overkill’s henchmen. Scarlet Overkill is the most popular super-villain in the world and, along with her inventor husband Herb, gives the trio a mission to steal the Queen of England’s crown so they may secure their places as her henchmen and have a boss for their tribe to serve.
If you know anything about minions you know a few things, they love bananas, they work hard, and that no matter what they try to do, nothing goes according to plan. It’s that last bit that makes Minions such a blast to watch because it’s really an animated Three Stooges with the added bonus that the minions are, technically speaking, evil and speak in a hilarious hybrid form of gibberish and random real words.
Speaking of the gibberish, this movie feels a bit like Wall-E in that half the dialogue in the movie you don’t understand, yet you pretty much know exactly what they’re talking about. Directors Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin did a great job orchestrating this film to make it accessible to all audiences and not let the material go stale because, let’s be frank, side characters tend to be the best but when they’re given their own movie, things don’t always pan out well and we may grow tired of the shtick. Thankfully, that didn’t happen.
I don’t want to post any jokes or spoilers but I do want to mention that if you like rock n’ roll, especially Van Halen, then there is a bit at the end involving Stuart that may make you start tearing from laughter. I personally couldn’t handle it and as a rock fan it made me so happy to get the reference along with the wild reaction that Stuart had to his gift.
Lastly, if I had to nitpick I may not have chosen Sandra Bullock as the voice of Scarlett Overkill, but other than that, I have no serious complaints.
Overall, Minions was a silly, joyful family flick that minion’s fans are going to go crazy for. As an adult, I was super into the film which means that as a kid I’d be re-watching it all the time. There’s something for everyone in this movie and it is hard not to be sucked into the charming and wacky nature of these adorable, little and somehow evil creatures.
