Do you know what this movie is about? After seeing it, I’m still not quite sure. It’s set up to be a western, but it’s a kids movie, but most of the references go way over their heads. Hmm…. Here’s what I got from it: Rango (at least that’s what he calls himself) stumbles into a small town in the desert and decides to present himself as a tough no-nonsense gunslinger.
Now, I don’t have a problem with silly movies, but there are so many elements that we are supposed to overlook that it became somewhat of a challenge to piece together what was actually happening. And I’m an adult! Gore Verbinski, what were you thinking?!
On the one hand, we are to believe that Rango fell out of a car where he was living in an aquarium alone with only some toys to entertain himself. I think this was supposed to explain why he had such an active imagination, but to me, it just came off as him being really lonely. So he falls out of the car, and happens upon a very-much-alive run-over armadillo who tells him of a town in the desert where he can find water. A town called, Dirt. Really? Dirt? You couldn’t come up with a better name? Anyway, I nodded off at one point and came to as they were sitting around a campfire telling very adult stories. This is supposed to be a kids movie, right? There were so many sexual and pop-culture references that it seems the filmmakers were making it for adults, not kids.
The pace was really slow and the only saving grace was the animation. WOW. Just wow. The animals were stunning, but I challenge you to name half of the creatures. They had to have made most of them up. I’m all for artistic license, but c’mon.
It’s got Johnny Depp’s voice so I’m sure it will lead the first weekend of the box office, but after that, the word-of-mouth will kill it. Even kids movies need to be entertaining.
(I also found the poster to be completely misleading. I wanted more of the orange fish! P.S. No, that was not Clint Eastwood, it was Timothy Olyphant.)
Rating: Rent this on bluray for nothing else than the amazing detail in all of the animals. 2/10
