The fourth Jason Bourne movie, Bourne Legacy, has been rumored for a while now, even if it seemed like there wasn’t anywhere left to go after the third film. In fact, star Matt Damon said he doesn’t have much interest in a fourth film unless Paul Greengrass, who directed Damon in the last two Bourne films and Green Zone, returned to direct. Well considering that Universal has just hired Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first three films, to direct Bourne Legacy, Damon’s involvement is now up in the air. Gilroy will also again write the film. What does this mean about Damon?
You can’t blame Universal for wanting to continue the series considering each film in the series made more than the previous film. According to the report on Deadline, Universal is reportedly willing to make the film with or without Damon (though we can all agree that they’d prefer Damon to be on board). Honestly, Damon’s involvement is what will probably make-or-break the film — no Damon equals a lower budget, lower expectations, and, heck, probably even direct-to-DVD. Then again, if Universal has any aspirations to turn the Bourne series into a Bond-like franchise, perhaps replacing Damon now could get that ball rolling. Besides, Julia Stiles needs something to do. Still, I’m sure Universal will throw a whole lot of money at Damon to come back to the franchise, but what do you think? Any interest in a Damon-less Bourne?
