20th Century Fox and the Farrelly Brothers (Dumb & Dumber, Hall Pass) have been trying to make a Three Stooges movie since the 1990s. The hardest problem for Peter and Bobby Farrelly, however, has been casting the film — since the Farrelly Brothers plan on making a new film in the present day featuring the Stooges characters, it has been difficult for them to cast a modern day Moe, Larry, and Curly. In fact, in the last few years it was reported that Sean Penn was to play Larry, Benicio del Toro was to play Moe, and Jim Carrey was to play Curly… except both Penn and del Toro left the project, presumably with Carrey too. Since there’s no film without Stooges, it hasn’t seemed like a new Three Stooges film would be made after all.
However, Variety reports that both Fox and the Farrellys have their eyes set on their Moe Howard, and it’s an inspired choice. Johnny Knoxville, leader of the Jackass crew, is the current choice for the leader of the Stooges. Since Knoxville had previously worked with the Farrellys when he starred in The Ringer, it seems that there’s a significant chance of this happening. Knoxville, of course, is very familiar with physical comedy and would fit the role better than possibly any other actor. In addition, Knoxville‘s involvement could appeal to a whole crowd of viewers who have never even seen any of the classic Stooges shorts or films.
Knoxville isn’t locked into the role yet, but should he take on the role it’ll be interesting to see who would be set in the roles of Larry and Curly.
Like the choice of Knoxville for Moe? Who would you like to see in the roles of the other Stooges? Should they bother including Shemp? Give us your thoughts in the comments below!
