What can I say about Rubber? It’s ridiculous but awesome. Quentin Dupieux (also known as Mr Oizo) the director, writer, composer, cinematographer, camera operator, and editor (overachieve much?) brings to life the story of a tire that kills people with telepathic powers. What makes it work is how it turns upside down everything that you have come to expect from movies.
Bringing a tire to life does not seem like an easy task, but without any cheesy humanistic features, Dupieux manages to do just that. The viewer comes to see the tire (Robert) as a living object capable of destruction. The camera moves with him and gives us his point of view therefore giving us his unique perspective.
One of my favorite aspects was the lack of visual/audio cues. So often in movies, we rely on a cut-a-way or a soaring score to let us know how to react. Not with this movie. Some of the most insane things happen without missing a beat and all you can do is laugh hysterically as someone’s head is blown off.
I plan on checking out Quentin Dupieux’s previous two movies, Nonfilm and Steak. He seems to have a unique perspective on filmmaking and I think he’s going to be making many more gems in the future.
Who will enjoy this movie? That’s a tough one. It moves rather slowly and when I first left the theater, although I did enjoy it, I wasn’t too impressed. But as I thought about it and discussed with other people, I began to like it more and more. I’m looking forward to another viewing and discussing it more.
On Demand everywhere, in limited theater release on April 1st, 2011.
Rating: A must-see for any movie geek who’s especially annoyed with cookie-cutter movies.
