Director Zack Snyder has yet to reveal who Superman will battle in his upcoming Superman film, tentatively titled Superman: Man of Steel. I’ve already reported that Snyder has announced that Viggo Mortensen will not be in the film, although he may now be back again after dropping out of Snow White and the Huntsman according to Variety. Latino Review reports that Edgar Ramirez (The Bourne Ultimatum) is being considered as another optino for a villainous role, while Deadline reports that Michael Shannon (TV’s Boardwalk Empire) is being considered as well.
Now it’s hard to judge who would be a better fit for the role when we don’t exactly know who these gentlemen might be playing, but I can definitely attest that Shannon‘s authoritative, captivating performance as the dogmatic Agent Van Alden on Boardwalk Empire would be perfect for General Zod or in a chilling portrayal of Superman’s arch-nemesis Lex Luthor. However, I’d hate it if being in a Superman film would remove Shannon from the cast of Boardwalk Empire! Ramirez has proven he could play a villain, too, as he battled Matt Damon in the last Bourne film. And, of course, Lord of the Rings, The Road, and Eastern Promises have provern that Viggo Mortensen can play anything.
Superman: Man of Steel is set for a December 2012 release. David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) is writing the screenplay based on a story developed by Goyer and Christopher Nolan, who will also produce the film. The only announced cast so far is Henry Cavill as Superman and Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as his adoptive parents, the Kents.
