I’ve been holding off on putting this trailer up for a while for some reasons I myself can’t explain. I saw it online two months ago but now that Oscilloscope Laboratories is releasing it in the states just in time for Christmas it definitely feels right to show it to you.
The wonderful folks from Finland have decided to take Santa, make him evil, and see what would happen if that evil Santa, who just so happens to have elves, was ever caught and sold. Interesting, right? Hit the jump to learn more about Rare Exports and to check out its new trailer.
Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, which is based off a short story, is a dark and thrilling comedy that has made its way around the festival circuit and, according to me, will now be required Christmas viewing for all Santa lovers and haters…well, maybe except for kids under 12. Rare Exports is written and directed by Jalmari Helander, the Finnish man who came up with the idea.
Below you will find the official plot synopsis a long with the N. American trailer. Be warned though, if you do decide to see this “it is better to go in blind” according to slashfilm, as the trailer does show a little more of the plot than necessary.
Official Plot Synopsis:
It’s the eve of Christmas in northern Finland and an “archeological” dig has just unearthed the real Santa Claus. But this particular Santa isn’t the one you want coming to town. When all the local children begin mysteriously disappearing, young Pietari and his father Rauno, a reindeer hunter by trade, capture the mythological being and attempt to sell Santa to the misguided leader of the multinational corporation sponsoring the dig. Santa’s elves, however, will stop at nothing to free their fearless leader from captivity. What ensues is a wildly humorous nightmare – a fantastically bizarre polemic on modern day morality. RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE is a re-imagining of the most classic of all childhood fantasies, and is a darkly comic gem soon to be required perennial holiday viewing.
