I normally want to say better late than never but I don’t know if that’s the case with the upcoming film, The Grand Master, a new biopic about the famed Ip Man, the legend that trained Bruce Lee.
The first official poster for the film has been released along with a new still for the upcoming martial arts biopic. The one thing that throws me off is what to actually title the film. IMDB calls it The Grand Master but this Chinese poster has translated it as The Grandmasters so hopefully, with some time, the correct name will be unearthed.
Anyway, even with a stellar cast that includes personal favorite, Tony Leung Chiu Wai (Infernal Affairs), Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and Chen Chang (Red Cliff), action choreography by the one and only Woo-ping Yuen (The Matrix), and even a good director at the helm, Kar Wai Wong, it is going to be hard to surpass the success of Donnie Yen’s two Ip Man films, two of the biggest box office successes in China over the past few years and happen to be some of my favorite movies. Hit the jump to check out the first poster and a still of Ziyi in Wing Chun form.
In this biopic, Tony Leung will be playing Yip Man and Chen Chang will be playing Bruce Lee. At the moment I do not know who Ziyi will be playing. The fourth Ip Man film is expected to be released in December although it was originally slated for a release right around the same time the first Ip Man came out. Unfortunately, Leung broke his arm so production was delayed for about six months.
As for the poster, I personally think the one below is pretty cool, particularly because of the use of the grayscale and the image of a fight that has just been finished. The rain also adds to the badass notion that no matter the situation, Yip Man conquers all. Check it out below and let us know what you think.
