The anticipation for The Tree of Life finally has an arrival date, poster(s), trailer, and what Cinema Blend describes as a “beautiful gallery of images,” for movie bloggers everywhere to gawk at. Terrence Malick, the tour-de-force visionary behind The Thin Red Line, has finally returned to Hollywood after a six year hiatus since The New World.
The Tree of Life, which is distributed by Fox Searchlight, stars heavy weights Brad Pitt (Inglorious Basterds) and Sean Penn (Fair Game), as well as Jessica Chastain (Jolene) in a “story [that] centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence,” according to IMDB.
The web has been buzzing about “a gallery of images showing off more beautiful shots in the trailer that was released back in December,” as per Cinema Blend. Adding to the hype for the “cerebral film about existence, the universe and… dinosaurs,” indieWIRE tells us that there are also “two brand new sites for the film [which] have been launched,” although they don’t offer up many details surrounding the story itself. Two websites devoted to the movie include one on Blogspot and another on Tumblr. However, The Star reveals that the film is “a ‘hymn to life’ set in small-town Texas.”
The “visual wonder” according to UA’s The Crimson White, was originally set to begin filming “in March 2008 with [the late] Heath Ledger in the lead role and Sean Penn in an important supporting role.” In addition, the article reads: “Even mainstream moviegoers are surely curious to see Brad Pitt and Sean Penn in the same film, not to mention wonder what Heath Ledger might have done in the lead role.”
Also, we find out that Malick released a statement on the film: “We trace the evolution of an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, Jack, one of three brothers… The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering, and death. The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth.”
While Malick has written the original script, he reunites with his The New World cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki who earned an Oscar nomination for their previous project. Other valuable roles in the film belong to Kari Matchett (Covert Affairs), Fiona Shaw (Harry Potter), wrestler Dalip Singh, and Joanna Going (Inventing the Abbotts).
Starting on May 4th, the U.K. sees the premiere of the film, whereas its stars will walk the red carpet at Cannes in support a week later. However, The Star remarks that “the much-anticipated new work from Malick, a notoriously painstaking auteur, was originally planned for a premiere at last year’s Cannes, Toronto, or New York film fests.”
Finally, the movie comes stateside on May 27th and in June, it will be released in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Check out images below, some courtesy of Tumblr, as well as the exciting trailer!
