There’s certainly no dispute over Scarlett Johansson’s prowess as a dramatic actress in roles such as Girl with a Pearl Earring, A Love Song for Bobby Long, or Lost In Translation. However, her turns in action-packed films like The Island and The Spirit have not been very well-received. We’ve all seen how gorgeous she looks in a catsuit and how stunning she models for Dolce & Gabbana, but the question is: Can the actress really carry a sci-fi flick? She’s recently been cast as an alien in Under The Skin, an adaptation of the Michael Faber novel. For more details, hit the jump!
Sexy Beast director Jonathan Glazer will helm the movie which centers around “an alien on earth, disguised as the perfect aesthetic form of a mesmerizing woman. She scours remote highways and desolate scenery looking to use her greatest weapon to snare human prey- her voracious sexuality. She is deadly efficient but over time becomes drawn to and changed by the complexity of life on earth. With this new found humanity and weakening alien resolve, she finds herself on a collision course with her own kind. Taking her point of view throughout the film presents a unique look at our world through alien eyes,” according to production company FilmNation.
Entertainment Weekly reported that Johansson’s character “kidnaps human hitchhikers and sends them back to her home world to be served as hors d’oeurves.” Some skeptics wonder how closely this plotline will mirror that of Species and Natasha Henstridge’s character, and if we can expect the same straight-to-DVD cheapness of sex appeal. However, this is not the first time that Johansson has taken on the role of seductress as seen in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona with co-star Javier Bardem and in Match Point against an engaged tennis star played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, as well as last year’s He’s Just Not That Into You, opposite Bradley Cooper’s married character.
Under The Skin’s director Glazer is no stranger to creepy dramas, having directed Birth, the film starring Nicole Kidman who falls in love with a 10 year old reincarnation of her late husband. HollywoodReporter.com says that Walter Campbell also co-wrote the script for the film which is expected to begin shooting late spring 2011.
In recent news, the four time Golden Globe nominee and Tony winner has been rumored to lend her acting chops to many highly anticipated films such as Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (based on the novel by Seth Grahme-Smith), and The Great Gatsby set for 2012. She is currently attached to The Avengers, which begins filming this winter, continuing her portrayal of her Iron Man 2 character, Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow.
