Yes, Will Ferrell is in Everything Must Go. Nick Halsey (Will Ferrell) is an alcoholic who loses his job, then his wife and is forced to live on his lawn after he’s locked out of his house. It’s kinda Leaving Las Vegas Will Ferrell-style, and not as depressing. Well, kinda.
I’m really happy when I see Will Ferrell get a chance to do something dramatic. He is amazingly believable as an alcoholic and uses his humor without going too far. Nick befriends a neighborhood boy, Kenny and the two form an unlikely bond. This is done to death in so many films, but it really works here. I didn’t like Michael Pena in the role, but I think a lot of that had to do with his character. Their relationship was not mapped out enough for me to understand and to empathize with him.
I did really liked how writer/director Dan Rush touched on the idea of people having secrets behind closed doors. What I most enjoyed was that most of the film just takes place on his lawn. He’s is not able to hide in his house, all of his problems are out in the open. Even if he doesn’t deal with it, people can see everything that is happening to him.
I never quite knew what was going on with the story because it seemed to go off in a lot of directions. I still don’t understand why Laura Dern’s character was even there. It’s going to be a tough film to market, and will likely just get a limited release.
Everything Must Go is playing at the Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday 4/27.
Rating: Ferrell is really good, the story is really…eh. 2/10
