IMDB, The Movie Blog, and Rotten Tomatoes are among just the many movie news and review websites that can be found. So then what is this website you may ask. Well it too is a movie news and review website. The question “why does the web need another one” might come to mind. We have two answers to that question.
First we, (Alex and Brandon), felt there was something missing from the aforementioned websites. They are large, have many reviews on many movies and yet we feel that’s where the issue lies. They tend to focus on the most popular movies, while leaving some of the better, lesser know ones out, especially foreign films. Now there isn’t anything wrong with reviewing popular movies as we’ll be doing that here as well, the problem is the way they are being reviewed. In an attempt to provide reviews to the masses, we feel that the reviews or comments found on many of these websites are simply either critical of the movie or speak only of its praises. The bandwagon effect comes into play as well. One person will write a bad review of the movie and one will write a good review mostly initially based on the hype surrounding the movie. From that point forward most reviews just pick an established side. In addition, reviews by professional critics often lack any real substance or relevance to the average Joe or film fanatic since they don’t explain who the movie might appeal to or why it just won’t work for anyone. As with most things in life, one object’s value is best determined by a similar objects value; meaning you can really only review a movie by comparing it to similar ones. That means comparing a movie to others in the same genre or other movies by the same director or both. That’s where our movie resume comes in.
Alex just finished watching all the movies on IMDB’s top 250, among countless and other lesser know movies, including great foreign films that the US masses have not likely heard of. Brandon on the other hand is slightly less ambitious in fulfilling the IMDB top 250 manifest destiny. He has seen most of the movies on that list, but many others that are not. Between the two of us we feel our different views and movie knowledge will be able to provide movie goers with an honest and average Joe review, while also opening the doors to new movies which, without our website, you would never have heard of, let alone even considered watching.
That brings us to the second answer to the question, why does the web need another movie news and review website? Besides bringing reviews that might hit closer to home by comparing movies to others you might have seen, we open the doors to new movies for our readers. We find that if you’ve seen the mainstream movies that are in theaters or have just been released on DVD, then you are in the reel popular movie conundrum. You want to watch a movie but have seen all the ones that have garnered headlines in recent weeks or months due to their opening weekend box office profits. You’re faced with the choice or re-watching one of those movies or selecting a new one that you’ve heard little or nothing about. That’s where we come in. Besides helping you to choose which movie to see this weekend in theaters, we want to help you choose which movie to watch once you’ve done that. Alex has a great knowledge of foreign films and will be providing reviews on those movies to help you see an entertaining movie that wasn’t in US theaters or more likely was in US but as a remake. Brandon has seen his fair share of what many refer to as B movies as well as alternative movies, which you wouldn’t necessarily go to the movie theater for but would consider renting. These movies although not popular are entertaining to watch. Don’t get us wrong there are foreign films and non mainstream movies that are horrible; but there are movies in those categories that aren’t horrible and deserve more attention than they get. Think Little Miss Sunshine, the movie started as an independent flick and soon skyrocketed to the mainstream highway. There are many movies that are as entertaining as Little Miss Sunshine, but never got the exposure. Lucky for you we’ve been exposed and hope to expose you as well.
Besides the aforementioned style our reviews will be written in, we have also developed what we feel is a more accurate and detailed rating system than those currently used. If you go to IMDB a movie is rated our of 10, on Rotten Tomatoes its out of 100%, and on Film School Rejects its letter grades such as A+. The problem is, what do the ratings exactly mean? What are their criteria? At quick glance you can’t say “okay based on this rating the movie is rated as a good movie.” Our rating system consists of ratings such as “brain dead kick ass flick.” Let’s face it sometimes you just want to relax, not keep track of multiple plot lines, and watch things get blown the hell up. Its obvious that looking at our rating compared to the aforementioned ones it is more descriptive and clear. You can easily see what type of movie it is and decide if that’s the type of movie you feel like watching. Other times you might want to watch a movie that will require more thinking and mental involvement on your end and our ratings will reflect that.
Well that’s enough talk about exposing for now. We welcome you to our movie news and review website. We hope you’ll come back and become a repeat reader.
