Video game adaptations have generally ranked anywhere from poor to horrendous over the years but it seems, like they have with comic book movies, that things are slowly changing and that’s what I’m hoping for with Scott Waugh’s (Act of Valor) adaptation of the street racing game Need of Speed. Check out the first trailer for the film below.
Framed for a crime he didn’t commit, muscle car mechanic and street racer Tobey (Aaron Paul) gets out of prison determined to settle the score with the man responsible for his false conviction.
I have to say, from what I’ve seen this visually looks a lot like the video game. Beautiful cars driving at high speeds while being chased by cops and helicopters and causing big crashes along the way. Throw in the visuals of our driver on the street being caught, similar to the cut scenes in the games, and this will likely be one fans of the game will appreciate and fans of movies like Fast and the Furious will eat up. Plus, Scott Waugh has a pretty good handle on action and will make sure this is both somewhat realistic and extremely entertaining.
The only part of the trailer I didn’t like was the oddly slow monologue by Aaron Paul, he almost seemed uncomfortable saying it, it was weird. I’m hoping the rest of the film’s dialogue will be delivered like that but I’m sure it won’t be nearly as good as the dialogue in the show he is known from, Breaking Bad. So yes, while the trailer may not be the best thing out there, some may say its even generic, at least it appears faithful to the game, something other people seem to be forgetting as they comment on the crappiness of the trailer.
Need for Speed opens on March 14, 2014 and also Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Scott Mescudi, Ramon Rodriguez, Michael Keaton, Rami Malek, Dakota Johnson and Harrison Gilbertson.
