I recently showed The Godfather in my film class, and my students — most of whom had never seen it — loved it. How could you not? In particular, our discussions afterwards focused on just how incredible Al Pacino’s performance was.
Pacino’s on-screen performances are legendary — The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Dick Tracy, Scarface, Scent of a Woman — but the 21st Century hasn’t been very kind to Pacino on the big screen. Variety reports that Pacino might actually have found a solid role in Imagine, in which he would play an aging rock star who discovers he has an adult son that he never knew about via a letter from John Lennon.
The Warner Bros. film will be directed by first-time director Dan Forgelman, who wrote Tangled, Crazy Stupid Love, and My Mother’s Curse. At one point Steve Carrell was set to play the son of Pacino’s character, and although he is no longer attached to star, Carrell is still producing the film. I guess it would be fair to say that this film will be a comedy (or, at the very least, a dramedy), which is not exactly what I think Pacino needs to bring him back to his glory days, but what do I know? I’m not his agent.
You’re probably not Pacino’s agent either, but what do you think — is this a good role for the former Michael Corleone?
