Albert Finney has been off screen for a while as he has been receiving treatment for an unspecified form of cancer, but the Big Fish, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, and Bourne Ultimatum actor remains one of the best living actors to have never won an Oscar. It’s great news then that Finney is joining the cast of the next James Bond film — with current rumors suggesting that it will be titled Skyfall (which means it probably won’t be) — as a “powerful superior government officer … a Foreign Office mandarin with powers over the Secret Intelligence Service, described to me as a reasonably big role and full of class. The part probably makes him M’s boss, though she — as played by Judi [Dench] — might not see it that way according to Slash Film. I totally buy him as a high-ranking member of the British government, and I think that Finney would make such a great addition to a Bond film that I am surprised he hasn’t been in one yet.
Bond 23 starts shooting this week and will be directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition). The script is by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who have written the past four Bond films, and are joined by John Logan (Any Given Sunday, Gladiator) this time around. Daniel Craig will, of course, return as Bond, Naomie Harris will debut as Moneypenny, and Javier Bardem will play the film’s villain. Also in the cast is Rhys Ifans and Ralph Fiennes, and Judi Dench will return as M. It is believed that part of the film will be set in South Africa, a first for Bond. The film is set for a worldwide release on November 9, 2012. As usual, the UK and Ireland will be getting the movie two weeks earlier on October 26.
