MovieBuzzers hasn’t reported much on Ridley Scott‘s next film project, and while I can’t speak for everyone, I know why I haven’t touched the story yet: there just hasn’t been much concrete information on it! However, for months one thing was consistently reported: the film would be a prequel to the Alien franchise, which all started back in 1979 behind the lens of Scott. That brought a combination of cheers (Hooray! Ridley Scott is back!) and jeers (Boo! Haven’t we beaten that dead horse enough?) from the peanut gallery of film fans. Well, as pre-production on the film moves forward, it turns out the one thing we thought we were sure on isn’t true: Ridley Scott‘s next film IS a science fiction film, but it ISN’T a prequel to Alien. Instead, it will be titled Prometheus. Hit “more” to learn all about this confusing film.
The initial script, which was written by Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour) from Scott‘s plot, has been going under rewrites by Scott and Lost creator Damon Lindelof when Scott realized that whatever this project was, it no longer “fit” the role of an Alien prequel. According to Scott:
While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.
So as Scott says people will recognize that the film has much in common with Alien, but is its own separate universe and its own science fiction story. Hmmm… nothing wrong with that, but let’s hope for Scott‘s sake that there isn’t too much “Alien DNA” in the film to cause detractors to call it a rip off of the Alien franchise. At least we can’t complain about yet another prequel/sequel/remake clogging up the theaters, right?
Prometheus is set for a March 9, 2012 release. Noomi Rapace (the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is set to star as scientist Elizabeth Shaw, with rumors suggesting Angelina Jolie or Charlize Theron will potentially play the other lead role of Vickers.
